A recent taxi strike at Dublin Airport saw over 400 drivers take up action against the decision made by the airport authorities to cut the number of parking spaces available for taxis.
A number of parking spaces were recently blocked off with concrete barriers in the area designated for waiting taxi drivers. This decision sparked anger among the drivers, who began to receive fines from traffic wardens when they were left with no choice but to park on the road. A number of slow driving protests were organised around the airport to demonstrate against their situation. Two days of severe traffic problems produced results when the DAA agreed to enter talks with taxi driver representatives.
Early Friday morning, after a night of debating, an agreement was reached between the two parties to allow access to the spaces as before, with a due date on the 7th September for a more permanent solution to be found. Should a mutual understanding not be reached in time, it is likely protests will continue. In the meantime, the barriers over spaces will be removed, and the parking fine revoked.
