Parrs Wood July 2017
With this year’s PARK(ing) Day fast approaching, we officially launched our 2017 campaign this past week with a little help from the sixth form students at Parrs Wood High School in Didsbury and Russell Meehan - aka Qubek, creator of the now iconic Manchester bee mural.
Equipped with spray paint and under the watchful guidance of the school’s Head of Art, John Davison and Russell, the students were asked as part of the event’s competition guidelines to create a design that depicted Manchester and tailor it to fit a standard parking space.
To create their designs, the students at Parrs Wood High School took inspiration from iconic Manchester architecture, famous Manchester faces and even conceptualised how they saw the future of the city’s landscape.
We headed down to the school to support the students with their eight hour stretch of painting, offering information on the origins of PARK(ing) Day and delving deeper into the inspiration behind the concepts.
The standard of the final seven pieces of artwork was exceptional – as you can see by the image below! We were extremely impressed how quickly the students adapted to the techniques of spray painting and the variety in the finished designs.
Following this first wave of artistic entrants, we’re now on the search for more of Manchester’s creative talent to help us park art around the city this summer! You don’t need to be a professional artist to enter; you just need a flare for design, a passion for Manchester and be able to create your design within one parking space.
If you, or someone you know, are up for the challenge, please jump over to our PARK(ing) Day page for more details.
Alternatively, if you’re a school or college that would like to get your students involved with PARK(ing) Day or a similar initiative, please email marketing@parkvia.com.
